Cape of Good Hope

Cape Point, South Africa

This entry will be a brief introduction, as I’m running out of time (and we’re getting REALLY hungry).  We had a great visit to the Cape Peninsula (Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point) today.  Stops included the vineyards of Constantia, Hout’s Bay for a boat ride to see Seal Island (seals were stinky but cute), Boulders (penguins everywhere!), shore-based whale watching (Southern Right Whale–a cousin of the guys we see off Cape Cod?) and a bike ride and hike through the National Park.  The weather cooperated beautifully and we’re pooped!  Our guide, Isaac, was a great ambassador for his City.  I didn’t agree with all of his opinions (he hoped we were returning to the US soon so we could vote for his man, McCain), he wasn’t afraid to voice them.  He didn’t stick to what he thought his guests might want to hear, but he definitely was proud of Cape Town, and hopeful about what the future will bring here.  Tourism is fairly well-developed, it seems, and it’s quite easy to find your way around.  There are clearly preparations being made for the upcoming World Cup events here in 2010.

The hike was amazingly beautiful.  The landscape was striking, with aqua waves crashing below craggy cliffs, dassie (hyrax or rock rabbit) scurrying about, baboons trying to make off with people’s belongings, and ostrich…yes ostrich wandering around by the sea. See photos for details!!
