Cape Town Waterfront

Our first full day in Capetown was spent at the Waterfront. We walked down from our hostel (the Ashanti Lodge), and it took about an hour.   It’s been cool in the evening and pretty warm during the day.  The cold is really only an issue at night. The hostel doesn’t have heat, but the blankets are warm.  Cape Town was quiet on a Sunday, but the Waterfront itself was hopping.  I can only imagine what it would be like in summer.  We looked at the main attractions around the Waterfront, which included the Clock Tower, Swing Bridge, various promenades and shops, a mall, and entertainment spaces.  We planned ahead and bought a ticket for the next day’s boat trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment.  A look around the museum reminded us of the story of Mandela’s struggle and hardship, and prepared us for the trip the next day.

I didn’t bring my notes down to this Internet Cafe, so I’ll have to edit later.  I also feel like I’m doing more speed typing than thoughtful writing, since I’m being charged in 15-minute increments!  It’s about 20 Rand ($3 or so) for an hour, but time flies.  More good news: Donny got his bag back late on Monday.  Hooray!  He can stop wearing my sweatpants to bed, and get out of his uniform of his Lucky jeans and the London T-shirt Rochelle gave him in London.  (Thank goodness for that T though!)

Photos should start showing up as we can upload them.  There should be a link at the right of the blog that says Flikr Photos.
