No visit to Pittsburgh would be complete without sampling some local favorite foods. Some think forst of the more traditional pierogi, the Polish dumpling filled with potato, cheese or other fillings. Others minds turn to Primanti’s sandwiches, famous for including the slaw and fries right in the layers. Our friend, Rachel, always looks immediately for the smiling faces of Eat’n Park’s cookies.

The Pittsburgh Wedgie

Then there’s the Pittsburgh Wedgie. Wedgie — Who else but a Pittsburgher could invent a sandwich encased in pizza crust and name it after a nightmarish underwear prank? Fox’s Pizza Den owner Jim Fox, began making the wedgie for customers who wanted all the fixins’ of a sandwich but didn’t want the “breadiness” of a bun. Incarnations of the wedgie can be found at dozens of local pizza shops, but just a word of advice: make sure it’s on the menu before asking the counter help to give you a wedgie. You might get more than you’d bargained for. If you need a translator for ordering, it might be a good idea to learn some Pittsburghese!
