They call it a “red-eye”

Darwin was named for Charles Darwin, who explored the harbor on his ship the Beagle.  Established in 1864, and having survived bombing by the Japanese in WWII, Darwin faced the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history, Cyclone Tracy, in 1974, Darwin is now a multi-ethnic, modern capital for the Nothern Territory.  After driving back from Kakadu, we drove north along some of the beaches and the Causarina area.  The beaches were gorgeous, but there were stern warnings against entering the water, especially in the season, as this was the time most likely to meet up with the dreaded box jellyfish.  What a pity.  We checked into the Frontier Hotel (a Quality Inn we got on points!) which seemed like a dream.  Not at all a 5-star, it may as well have been for us.  There was air conditioning, a TV, a fridge, private bathroom with the sample sized shampoo and conditioner, towels…amazing!  After returning the van, we decided to have one of our marathon city-walks where we try and discover every corner of a city on foot.  It was probably way to hot to attempt, but we did see a lot of Darwin.  We spent the evening in our cool room watching something silly on TV, and waited for our 3:00 am wake up call for the shuttle to take us to the airport fro a 5:20 am flight to Cairns.
