Tierra del Fuego

We spent Thanksgiving hiking in Tierra del Fuego National Park.  The route took us along the coast and then through a mixture of Patagonic and High Andes forest.  The “lenga” covers mountain slopes.  The most eye-catching were guindo trees most of which had large nodules with an interesting fungus growing out of them.  They were like bunches of orange-colored globes, spongy and about the size of a big grape.  There was also a lot of “calafate,” that´s made into a delicious jam.

Animal life includes the red fox, the guanaco (kind of like a llama), the otter (chungunco) and the Canadian beaver (introduced and caused flooding in some areas of the park due to their dam-building). We saw tons of the also-introduced rabbits that have caused some damage as well.  As for birds: albatross, condor (many), kelp geese, oystercatchers, some ducks and diving petrel.
