We borrowed the 1983 Holden Gemini (with a GM key) and head downtown to do a little exploring. On the way we stopped for a visit with Jean’s Mom, Jean, my great aunt. She liked hearing traditional Scottish songs sung by John, and gave us some beautiful smiles before we had to say goodbye. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring downtown Adelaide with a walking tour (self-directed with the help of Lonely Planet) that began with the Central Market. I would do all my shopping there if I lived in Adelaide. There were rows and rows and rows of fresh veggies, fruit, bread, meats, cheese, olives, nuts…all the basics, all fresh and mostly organic and local.
Later we walked along the River then through the amazing Botanic Garden, and back past a number of historic buildings, landmarks, churches, museums and parks. We spent some time in the Aboriginal history collection of the Museum of South Australia before closing time. John was ready at the barbie at home. We had various meats, potato, onion, and a whole bunch of sides including a yummy salad with avocado, pear and home-grown parsley from Jean’s garden!
Where did the Holden come from?
These narratives are fantastic and the photos terrific.

DAD–THE HOLDEN IS JOHN AND JEAN’s!
Oh wow, I miss the market! Used to go there at least a couple times a month, usually on Friday nights. Would have dinner first over in the china town food area, something Malaysian or Thai and then go do some shopping. Loved buying flowers there at the markets too. I can visualize everything you’re seeing and talking about and hope you’re having a great time! Jane
Jane–Thanks for the note! We ARE having a great time. I’d miss the market too…what a great spot. Chinatown looks like a good option for a bite to eat, as well. Donny has had his eye on some dumplings there for days.
It’s been a while since I was there – almost 5 years now – but there used to be a fantastic Yum Cha food area in there – great steamed pork buns/dumplings. Loved that area too for fresh chinese veggies.
