The Cape Cross Seal Colony is a breeding reserve for the Cape fur seals who lay and play along the shore. Seals are truly smelly, but it was fun to watch their antics: fighting, nursing, barking, swimming.
We continued down the Skeleton Coast (named for all the shipwrecks dotting the shores). The seas are trecherous, and the surrounding areas are a vast wilderness great for hiking, fishing, etc.
Arriving in Swapokmund was like stepping back into a more familiar kind of civilization. There were stop lights, paved roads, hotels, tourists. It was a meeting place and jumping off point for overland trucks and a destination for German tourists and backpacking adrenaline junkies. Since it was Sunday afternoon, many shops were closed, so we had a quick look around, listened to the activities briefing, and checked into our dorms. A bed…a real bed for the night was pure luxury. Donny had a kudu steak at our group dinner that evening, and was very pleased with his choice.
Seal photos.
