Comic Con

The 41st Comic Con was held in San Diego July 22-25, drawing over 120,000 people to the city’s Convention Center and downtown Gaslamp District. The conference is a gathering featuring the newest, latest and greatest in comics, sci-fi, anime and Hollywood films.  There are panels with directors, producers and actors, exhibits, premieres, parades, costumes, promotions, collectibles and general celebration. One of the most talked-about movies soon to be released was Disney’s TRON: Legacy, due out in December. It’s the sequel to the 1982 movie about a hacker sucked into a virtual world inside a mainframe computer. We worked all weekend behind Flynn’s Arcade, a complete, recreated arcade full of 1980s video games including Ms. Pac-man, Centipede, Frogger, of course TRON and a touch-screen Coke Zero vending machine. Behind the TRON game, the wall opened up, and people walked down dark corridors past a set that looked like the laboratory from the movie and then into a flashing, blue laser being sucked into the mainframe and arriving inside a neon “End of Line Club” with pulsing music by Daft Punk (who did the soundtrack) and a previously unseen trailer for the new movie. The first night there were costumed characters from the movie mingling with the crowd, some serving Coke Zero, and in the back room, we were posted up at the bar near the merchandise windows filled with all the stuff TRON fans will soon be able to buy. A couple of videos below should give an idea of the scene. If you look closely, you can catch us in a couple of the videos. This article from Firstshowing.net is a great recap, and has some good photos!
