Day 2. Rather than waste more time trying to get a status update on the lost luggage on a Sunday, we head to Victoria Falls. A 20,000 kwacha taxi ride got us to the front gates of this World Heritage Site. We visited the small visitor’s center, which displayed detailed information in a single room with laminated info pages and photos on the walls. In the center there was a pit showing in layers some of the archaeological history of the area and its people.
The falls themselves were an awe-inspiring sight. Even in this dryer season, when the water levels are low, the power of all that rushing water was clearly evident. We spent several hours walking from one viewpoint to another along trails that wound around the ledge of the gorge opposite the falls. We looked across to Zimbabwe, and the people who looked as if they were walking along the top of the falls themselves. We decided not to cross the footbridge to the Zimbabwean side and have to pay for another VISA, but a couple of guys did try hard to sell us some copper bracelets so they could buy food, etc. on the Zambian side to bring back across. At the end, the day was relaxing and therapeutic and very beautiful. Since it was Sunday, there were a few local people around visiting with their families which was nice to see as well.
Back at Grubby’s there was still no sign of the bag, so we sent an email to the travel insurance company, since collect calls are apparently impossible from here. We bought a couple of steak pies from Wonderbake (VERY popular with everyone) and tried to make a plan. Would Donny need to buy clothes and things for the whole rest of the 7-month trip? Just a few things for camping? A trip to the airport was in order for after the flights from Jo’burg arrived on Monday.
