Pre Rup temple is located just south of the Eastern Reservoir within the Angkor Wat Archaeological Complex in Cambodia. The temples are a symbol of the country and a source of pride for its people. The ancient site, as much as 1000 years old, is visited by hordes of tourists, but somehow retains a deep sense of peace.
Cambodia’s not-so-distant past is filled with violence and sadness. Signs along the roads still warn of uncleared mine fields, and killing fields where so many who lost their lives during the reign of the Khmer Rouge are buried. But through all of the turmoil, the unique, Khmer culture and beliefs survived. Religion plays a huge role in modern life, and about 90% of the population is Buddhist.
This image has always spoken to me. The young monk looks out over the temple ruins in into the jungle beyond as the sun grows lower in the sky. What is he pondering? What does he see? What will his future, and that of his country, hold?

My favourite country so far. Despite the ravages of war, they are such a bright and hopeful and friendly people. Lovely shot.

Thanks for visiting TurtlesTravel and leaving words of encouragement.
I like the way you had the monk in the red robe on the edge. That added a lot to the picture.
