This unfurling New Zealand fern, or koru, is a perfect representation of “Renewal.” The koru, Maori for “spiral” or “loop,” symbolizes growth, strength and peace, as well as new life. It’s often used in Māori art as a symbol of creation. The shape conveys a feeling of perpetual motion, while the inner coil curving back on itself shows a return to the point of origin.
This photo was captured in the Waipoua Forest near Tane Mahuta or “Lord of the Forest”. It’s the largest Kauri tree in New Zealand and is believed to be 1200 years old. Here is a link to our post about Waipoua Forest.
